Although the risks are greater, there are certain safety measures that motorists can take to protect themselves and do their best to avoid accidents that can lead to serious injuries and even death.

The rules of the road are worth following for safety reasons. Although motorcyclists are supposed to follow these same rules, there are times when they might move around from one lane to the next or go around a line of vehicles to simply get ahead of the traffic. Some motorcyclists ride at relatively high speeds, too. While it is more common for drivers to get into accidents while behind the wheel of a car, van, or truck, motorcycle accidents do happen. When these accidents occur, there is a greater risk of sustaining serious, life-threatening injuries. Even when a small accident happens, it could lead to big injuries for the person riding a motorcycle.

How to Stay Safe on a Motorcycle

There are certain things you can and should do when you are a motorcyclist to keep yourself as safe as possible on the road. You should never get on your motorcycle after drinking, even if you have only had one alcoholic beverage. It’s dangerous to drink and drive, regardless of the type of vehicle you’re operating. In addition to avoiding alcohol when you are planning to ride your motorcycle, you should always have protective gear on your body. Wear a helmet to protect your head in the case of an accident. Injuries to the head and neck are common among those involved in motorcycle accidents but having a helmet on is a simple way to protect yourself from sustaining traumatic brain injuries.

Follow Those Road Rules

If you have been driving for a while, you probably already know the rules of the road. Not only are you putting yourself at risk by not adhering to these rules, but motorcyclists are unfortunately victims of other drivers’ negligence. This negligence often stems from drivers’ refusal to yield to oncoming traffic or by not looking to see if a motorcyclist is driving near them before crossing over into the next lane. Speeding can put other motorists on the road at risk, especially because your time to come to a stop in the case of an emergency is dramatically decreased. Not only should motorcyclists be cognizant of their speed but all motorists should adhere to the posted speed limit in the interest of their safety. Many motorcycle accidents are the result of drivers failing to yield to oncoming traffic before making a left-hand turn or speeding through the light, unfortunately hitting a motorcyclist who has the right of way.

Wear Protective Clothes

Not only should you wear a helmet while riding, but you should also invest in other types of protective clothing that could save your life. You can wear bright shirts and jackets that make it easier for motorists to see you when you are sharing the road with them, especially if you are riding around on the motorcycle at night. You may want to consider wearing protective pads on your elbows and knees just in case you do fall from your motorcycle and get injured. Some motorcyclists wear reflectors on their bodies to make it even easier for people to see them out on the road.

Taking preventative measures is a great way for you to keep yourself safe on the road.
