A recent poll found that many young adults in the United States are in favor of measures to reduce gun violence and gun-related crimes, including limits on firearm ownership rights. However, the same poll also found that young adults in the US don’t necessarily view gun control as a critically important issue in the upcoming elections.
The GenForward poll, which was conducted by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago and the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, had a special focus on young adults of color. GenForward pollsters questioned 1,940 adult respondents between the ages of 18 and 30, with particular attention being paid to the ways in which race and ethnicity might affect views of gun control measures in the US. The survey was funded with grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
According to survey results, roughly 90 percent of young adults would support comprehensive background checks on anyone applying to purchase a firearm. Importantly, support for this kind of limitation on firearms ownership was fairly similar across different racial and ethnic groups.
Additionally, a majority (57 percent) of poll respondents said that they would support outright bans on sales of semi-automatic weapons in the US. Support for these sorts of all-out limits on ownership of certain types of potentially dangerous firearms was particularly high among Asian-Americans, with 74 percent of Asian-Americans stating that they were in favor of bans on rapid-firing semi-automatic weapons.
With gun violence making headlines throughout the US, including New Jersey, New York, and just about every other state, it is not surprising that a vast majority of young adults said that they want the government to impose more stringent penalties for violations of gun laws.
New Jersey already has some of the toughest gun crime laws in the country. In fact, the NJ Graves Act imposes minimum mandatory terms of incarceration for individuals caught in possession of a firearm without a valid permit or firearms ID.
