It is highly suggested that anyone in East Brunswick who is charged with causing a fatal drunk driving accident speak with a lawyer; these charges carry very serious punishments and it is important that only those who are truly guilty are convicted. Ultimately, however, it is up to each individual defendant to choose how they want to defend against the charges: do they want to take the stand? do they want their attorneys to argue every possible defense? do they want to seek lesser charges?
This also means that a defendant can choose to plead guilty, even if it is against his or her attorney’s advice. This is what one out-of-state man did after causing a fatal accident while drunk. The young man not only confessed, but he made a video and posted it to YouTube, saying that if he was charged, he would plead guilty.
It should be repeated that this was this young man’s decision and he made and posted the video despite his attorneys’ advice, but it was his choice to make. If anyone in New Jersey wanted to make a similar confession, it should only be done after the individual has consulted with an attorney and truly knows what rights he or she is giving up by confessing.
Because the young man pled guilty from the very beginning, he was quickly convicted and sentenced. He was sentenced to six and a half years in prison, two years shy of the maximum. The ex-wife of the man who was killed said in a letter that her former husband would not have wanted the young man to receive the maximum penalty.
