A man is in custody with the Monmouth County police department after being arrested and charged with the death of an 11-year-old girl from Keansburg. The man, 18, lived above the girl and her mother in the same apartment building in the complex. The girl’s father lives in Jamaica and was unable to attend the funeral. The man has admitted to stabbing the girl and using a computer cable to blind her.
Details of the case are limited, but the girl’s body was found dead near her home. She had been missing from her family for approximately 15 hours before she was found dead.
Her mother had reported her missing shortly after not being able to find her on the same day. When her body was found, it laid at the rear of the Hancock Arms apartment complex, where she was later discovered. The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office was called in to help assist in the search the next day at approximately 5 a.m.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office initially ruled the girl’s death a homicide. Once the girl was found, the prosecutor assured the community they were safe, saying at this time, they believed it was an isolated crime.
The Middlesex Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death of the young girl. The arrested man had a detention hearing before a Superior Court judge. He will remain in jail until his trial date.
The school district where the girl attended class provided grief counselors at the Bolger Middle School, where she went to class.
