Police in Middletown NJ recently arrested four individuals accused of stealing cooking oil from a local sushi restaurant.
The suspects are accused of committing numerous thefts over a period of several weeks when they allegedly struck Sono Sushi, a sushi restaurant located on Route 35 in Middletown, New Jersey. Law enforcement said that the suspects repeatedly broke into the business and took the cooking oil.
The owners of the sushi restaurant became aware of the constant break-ins and thefts and notified the Middletown Police Department. Police then began a lengthy investigation and conducted surveillance outside the restaurant. Law enforcement reportedly observed the suspects in the process of stealing the cooking oil from the sushi restaurant and immediately moved in to arrest the men.
The four suspects include three men from Newark NJ and one man from North Arlington NJ. All of the suspects have been charged with multiple criminal offenses, including theft of movable property, burglary, possession of burglary tools, and conspiracy.
Additionally, one of the suspects was also charged with illegal possession of prescription drugs because arresting officers allegedly found him carrying oxycodone without a valid prescription.
Although it might seem strange that the suspects allegedly stole cooking oil – not cash or food – from the restaurant, Monmouth County prosecutors explained that cooking oil can be refined into biodiesel. It is believed by authorities that the suspects may have been turning the stolen cooking oil into the alternative fuel source and then either using it or selling it on the black market.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspects were remanded to the Monmouth County Correctional Institution in Freehold, NJ. The suspects were being held on varying bail amounts. If and when the suspects secure their release from policy custody by posting bail, they will still have to address the criminal charges in Monmouth County Superior Court.
