Ford Issues Major Auto Recall due to Door Safety Issue

August 9, 2016

Ford Motor Company has issued of product recall of more than 800,000 cars in the United States and Mexico. The recall was prompted by the discovery that the side door latches on the vehicles are prone to breaking, which can cause the doors to swing open as the cars are moving on the roadway.

The total number of Ford vehicles being recalled is approximately 830,000. The major auto recall affects several different vehicle models, including Ford Escape SUVs manufactured from 2013 to 2015, C-Max cars manufactured from 2013 to 2015, Focus cars manufactured from 2012 to 2015, Ford Transit Connect vans manufactured from 2014 to 2016, Ford Mustang sports cars manufactured from 2014 to 2016, and Lincoln MKC SUVs manufactured in 2015.

The problem with the defective vehicles is that a faulty spring part in the doors can break without any warning to the vehicle owner. This can potentially result in a serious car accident when the driver takes the car on the roadway and the door suddenly swings open. At this time, Ford is only aware of a single car accident that was caused by the door latch defect.

The door latch issue can be exacerbated in high humidity, which is why Ford is focusing its initial recall efforts on vehicles in 16 southern and western states with particularly high temperatures. The reality, however, is that most states have warm weather during the summer, so it is possible that the recall will expand. In the meantime, anyone who owns one a Ford vehicle in which the door latch has broken should immediately contact their local car dealership and arrange for repairs – regardless of what state they reside in.
