Federal Government Asks Honda to Immediately Repair Defective Airbags in Recalled Vehicles

The federal government recently took the extraordinary step of calling on Honda to repair all recalled vehicles with defective Takata air bag inflators.

The major auto manufacturer has come under intense scrutiny in recent months as reports of deaths and injuries linked to the defective auto parts have emerged. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been 13 deaths directly connected to defective Takata airbags installed in Honda motor vehicles. The safety issue is that the airbags can rupture as they deploy with too much force upon impact. The ruptured airbag can then send shrapnel flying inside the car, potentially hitting the driver and passengers. The rupture occurs because the airbag inflator becomes more prone to safety issues when exposed to extreme heat over time.

A vehicle recall was previously issued by Honda. However, the problem with repairing all of the recalled cars is that the auto company simply doesn’t have the resources and parts needed to fix and/or replace all of the faulty airbags at once. The recall affected nearly 100 million airbags in cars manufactured and distributed by 14 different automakers around the world.

The Honda vehicles that were affected include the 2001-2002 Honda Accord, 2001-2002 Honda Civic, 2002 Honda CR-V, 2002 Honda Odyssey, 2003 Honda Pilot, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2 TL, and 2003 Acura 3.2CL. In total, there are more than 300,000 Honda cars with the defective airbag inflators still being driven on U.S. roadways.

The government’s call for immediate repairs by Honda comes after auto safety regulators with the NHTSA released new test data indicating that the recalled cars are more than 50 percent likely to rupture and injure passengers in the event of a serious car collision. As a result, any consumers who still drive a recalled car should stop using the vehicle and call a local car dealer to arrange for repairs.
