In the aftermath of the tragic death of Hollywood actor Anton Yelchin, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Fiat Chrysler.
Yelchin, one of the stars of the recent blockbuster Star Trek movies, was killed when he was crushed by his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee in what has been called an auto accident. It is believed by officials at the scene of the accident that Yelchin may have died when his Fiat Chrysler did not remain in “park” and crushed him against a stone pillar in the driveway of his Los Angeles home.
At this time, Yelchin’s death has not been officially linked to the gear shifter problem with the Fiat Chrysler automobiles. However, it is expected that the investigation into the car accident will provide insight into what exactly caused the young actor’s death.
Fiat Chrysler has come under a lot of scrutiny in recent months after it was revealed that the company’s vehicles may have a problem with the gear shifters. In fact, Fiat Chrysler took the extraordinary step of recalling the affected vehicles in April so that the gear shifters could be fixed.
The problem with the Fiat Chrysler gear shifters is that drivers can mistakenly believe that their cars are in the “park” position and then exit the vehicles – only to quickly realize that the car is still moving.
The recent class action lawsuit was filed on behalf of victims, including Anton Yelchin, who have been injured or killed in car accidents caused by the Fiat Chrysler gear shifter issue.
The lawsuit specifically alleges that the automotive company failed to fix the product defect in a timely fashion. As a result, claims the lawsuit, consumers were unnecessarily put at risk of serious injury or even death.
To date, 41 people have allegedly sustained injuries as a result of the auto design defect. Now Yelchin’s tragic death has resulted in even more attention for the Fiat Chrysler defective automobile issue.
