West Long Branch Police Officer Wins $1.5 Million Settlement In Discrimination Suit

A female police officer for the West Long Branch police department was awarded $1.5 million in a settlement for a discrimination suit she filed against the police force.

A jury came to a decision on the settlement award after the woman filed a lawsuit that claimed she was discriminated against by being passed over for a promotion. The woman alleged that she didn’t receive the promotion in question because of her gender. She also claimed she was made to work in a hostile work environment.

According to the woman, she was removed from her position in the detective bureau and denied the promotion she was seeking because she was a woman and had been discriminated against as a result.

She filed a suit against the police force, which she began her career with in 2004. According to court records, she had received positive performance reviews prior to becoming a member of the detective bureau. She joined the bureau in 2008.

While working with the bureau, she became involved romantically with another officer. The two eventually married. Over time, their relationship ended as the woman started seeing another officer. At this time, she was removed from the bureau, which she alleged was done “with discriminatory intent.” The woman was then placed on the midnight shift of the department despite having seniority over other officers, according to the woman.

The jury for the case was presented weeks of testimony from both parties, which also included the West Long Branch Police Department.
