A woman of Denville who was attacked and injured by a dog she was dog sitting has reported been awarded $850,000 by a jury in Morris County. The woman, 38-year-old Jennifer Reid, had been dog sitting her neighbor’s 80-pound German Shepard. While she prepared to take the dog out for exercise, the dog jumped and bit her face. The force of the attack knocked Reid back, pinning her against a chair. The attack led to Reid seeking plastic surgery to repair the damage, although she does now have a chin scar from the attack. Moreover, Reid’s counsel argued that the attack led to Reid experiencing permanent back injuries.

According to Reid, the dog’s owner, Kevin Burdorf, failed to notify Reird of two prior attacks the dog had committed.

Under certain circumstances, dogs can be extremely dangerous animals. Regardless of the size or weight, dog attacks can leave a person severely injured and in some cases, permanently disfigured. Though dogs can be unpredictable, it is the responsibility of the dog’s owner to make sure they are properly trained and secured before allowing them to interact with others.

In the state of New Jersey, there are laws specifically tailored for this kind of situation. A person who is injured by a biting dog can hold the dog’s owner liable for the attack under certain circumstances. Moreover, the dog does not even have to show prior violent behavior or bites.

Nobody should have to suffer at the hands of a negligent dog owner. If you or a loved one has been bitten and injured by a dog, it pays to know your legal rights in this situation.
