Lakewood NJ Man Indicted for Murder, Allegedly Stabbed Person in Parked Car

A Lakewood NJ man has been indicted on first degree murder charges related to the fatal stabbing of a person sitting in a parked car.

The suspect is a 32-year-old resident of Lakewood, New Jersey. On June 22, 2016, he was reportedly in a car with the victim when he used a knife to stab the victim in the chest. The suspect then allegedly got out of the motor vehicle, which was parked in the parking lot of the Martin Luther King Jr. apartment complex, and fled the area on foot.

Afterwards, the victim attempted to drive himself to a nearby hospital. However, he never made it to the hospital, instead crashing his vehicle into a utility pole located just off John Street near River Avenue. When emergency medical responders found the victim, they rushed him to Monmouth Medical Center so that he could be treated for his stab wound to the chest. Tragically, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital just a few hours later.

The Ocean County Medical Examiner’s Office conducted an autopsy and determined that the victim died as a result of the stab wound. He was 33 years of age at the time of his death.

The Lakewood Police Department, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department investigated the homicide and soon identified the suspect as the likely culprit. The suspect was later placed under arrest and charged with first degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Now the suspect could be headed to trial in Ocean County Superior Court, located in Toms River NJ, after an Ocean County jury recently handed down an indictment on the murder charges, as well as the weapons offense charges.

If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the most serious criminal charges of murder, he could end up spending the rest of his life behind bars. That’s because the NJ Criminal Code treats murder differently than it treats other first degree felonies. While a normal first degree crime carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in New Jersey State Prison, murder can result in life imprisonment. Moreover, the minimum mandatory term of incarceration for a person convicted of murder in NJ is 30 years.

While the suspect awaits resolution of the criminal charges against him, he is being held at the Ocean County Jail on a massive bail amount of $1 million, with no 10-percent cash option available for posting bail and securing his temporary release from police custody.
