Federal Government Looking into Smart Gun Technology

The Obama Administration is going to be implementing a new policy directed at stopping the rise in gun violence in the United States.

One of the things that the government will be looking into is the specific requirements that smart gun technology would have to meet in order to be deemed “safe” for use by law enforcement. Among the federal agencies that will be researching smart gun technology are the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the US Justice Department. These agencies will be investigating the viability of smart guns, as well as the cost-effectiveness of implementing the plan.

It is expected that the research into smart gun technology will be finished by October 2016, with the various federal agencies providing Obama with their recommendations at that time.

One way that the government may encourage gun manufacturers to get involved with the research is to make the companies eligible for cash prizes and other incentives.

President Obama announced the new policy initiatives in a Facebook post, noting that a lot of gun-related injuries and deaths “are the result of legal guns that were stolen, misused, or discharged accidentally.” Smart gun technology, said Obama, can be used “to prevent the wrong person from pulling a trigger on a gun.”

The push to cut down on gun violence and impose additional government oversight when it comes to firearm purchases has not been without controversy. For example, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has said that Obama’s “obsession with gun control” has come at the expense of more important issues because the federal government is devoting limited resources to stopping gun purchases when those resources could otherwise be devoted to fighting terrorism.
