Small Community in New Jersey Dealing with Heroin Epidemic

Williamstown NJ has been hit with a crippling heroin epidemic, resulting in a heroin overdose death rate that is nearly 25 times higher than the national average.

Although the small, unincorporated community in Monroe Township, New Jersey has a population of just over 15,000 people, the area’s drug problem has resulted in many overdoses and deaths. Over the course of the past decade, 53 people in Williamstown have died as a result of heroin or opiate overdoses.

Williamstown is located in Gloucester County, NJ, so the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office has been tasked with trying to figure out why the heroin overdose death rate is so high in such a small area. Beyond that, the prosecutor’s office has recognized that the problem is much larger than just one town: Gloucester County’s overall heroin death rate is almost seven times higher than the national average, with 17.3 heroin OD deaths reported per 100,000 Gloucester County residents.

Of course, no area in Gloucester County has been hit as hard as Williamstown, which has a heroin overdose death rate of 63.8. Given the urgency of the situation, officials with the New Jersey Department of Health and other agencies are scrambling to figure out exactly why the heroin problem is so bad in the small community.

Some people speculate that the geographical location of Williamstown, with its proximity to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a major factor in the heroin epidemic. Michael DeLeon, a well-known anti-drug activist, said that South America ships its heroin into seaports in Philadelphia, making it very easy for the deadly drugs to then be driven into Williamstown. Beyond that, DeLeon noted, prescription drug abuse is a problem in Williamstown because the community has a middle-class population with children who have easy access to Adderall and other opioids.
