YOUR GUIDING LIGHT IN A DARK HOUR

Our firm has persisted for more than 40 years by providing clients powerful and attentive legal representation for a wide range of issues.

Bite Your tongue When You are Pulled Over in Monmouth County

Picture it: you are driving along Route 35 or Route 36, or any other roadway, and you see flashing lights in your rearview mirror. You immediately get a lump in your throat. This is especially true if you really have no idea what you were doing wrong.

Regardless of the reason for the traffic stop — it could be anything from a broken tail light to speeding to suspected drunk driving — there are certain things you can do to help yourself once you are safely stopped on the side of the road.

  1. Put your hazard lights on immediately. This will show the officer that you understand the importance of following the rules of the road.
  2. Stay in the car.
  3. Remain calm. If the officer is going to give you a ticket, so be it. If you have a chance of convincing him or her to give you a warning, acting crazy isn’t going to help your case.
  4. If it’s dark out, turn on your interior lights. This will give the officer some sense of comfort that you aren’t trying to conceal something in the dark.
  5. Keep your hands in view – on the steering wheel is best.
  6. Do not attempt to collect your documents — license, insurance and registration — until the police officer asks you to do so.
  7. Do not make any sudden movements that could make the cop think you are trying to reach for a weapon or hide something.
  8. Sometimes the officer will ask you if you know why you are being pulled over. Never admit anything, but be polite. A sarcastic response will not help you. Answering the question with details could be used against you later in court.
