Authorities Mum As Sayreville High Hazing Investigation Goes On

No one in authority is saying much at this point, but there is certainly a lot of conversation and commentary being generated over an investigation into allegations of locker room hazing at a Middlesex County high school.

Based on news reports, what has people upset is not merely that there are allegations that seniors have been hazing freshmen on the football team, but also the form the claimed hazing has taken. Whether criminal charges of any kind will result is still unknown, but police are investigating.

Depending on how things play out, there seem to be any number of possible actions that prosecutors might choose to pursue, any of which would warrant action by suspects to line up legal representation.

The local superintendent of schools is already on record as characterizing the practices reported as “incidences of harassment, intimidation and bullying” as defined and prohibited by New Jersey law. But one parent has described acts that have been construed to be of a sexual nature, suggesting that someone could wind up facing some sort of sexual assault charge.

Some are also raising questions about whether coaching staff at the school need to be held accountable in some way for having failed to prevent the actions that are claimed.

One resident of the town where this is all playing out told the New York Daily News that as many as 10 freshmen boys may have been sodomized as part of the alleged hazing ritual.

For now, the superintendent is refusing to comment about the case. That’s a position the County Prosecutor’s Office and the police are taking as well.

The point we hope to emphasize here is not directly related to this case. Rather, we make the observation that whenever a criminal investigation begins, the legal process is officially underway. And from that moment onward, anyone implicated in a case would be wise to have an attorney helping them protect their rights.
